Popular dancehall artiste Dexta Daps remained in police custody for a second night last night, and has not yet been officially charged with a crime.
The singer, whose real name is Louis Grandison, was arrested two days ago (April 8) by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Videos of the arrest went viral on social media as the Grandison was led away in handcuffs by several armed cops in Seaview Gardens community, a West Kingston community where he lives.
Grandison is being held at the Hunt’s Bay Police Station in Kingston and police sources have disclosed that the arrest is in connection with ongoing investigations into shootings and gang-related activities in the South St. Andrew area.
The Jamaican government had placed the area under a State of Emergency (SOE) since January 1, 2020, as murders skyrocketed in the communities. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness in declaring the SOE noted that the main cause of death in the area is “gangs, dons and guns,” as it recorded 94 murders in 2019. Police sources allege that Daps is the one of those “dons”.
